The Kennedy Report
According to Riddell, the jail could last for 10 more years with a $15 million investment. The county has that $15 million – set aside from the excess sales tax collected by the Democrat commissioners from 2017 to 2021. But, Moore wants to use a portion of those funds to match the state funds for the infrastructure development in New Russia Township.
Rather than renovating the jail, the Republican county commissioners are moving forward with plans for jail construction at $100+ million. They are looking at an increase in the sales tax for funding and repayment of bonds that will be issued.
Curious that the Republican commissioners would move forward with construction after claming budget issues and the need for budget cuts. Then again, the county does have about $60 million in the General Fund fund balance and could tap into that. Big question – If they can dip into that for jail construction, why can’t they for general operations?
